Discovering Kenwood House: A Hidden Gem for Family Photos

I. A Hidden Gem in London

Albalone, Family Photographer in North London

Hello, I am Alba!

A. Meet the Family Photographer

Hi there! If you’ve just arrived on my website, my name is Albalone (you can call me Alba), I am a family photographer based in London. I shoot families in the comfort of their homes, but I mostly love shooting outdoors. My work takes a lifestyle approach, showcasing candid, raw and connected moments between mothers, fathers and children. I feel most creative when around nature and colourful flowers and love mixing both portraits and nature.

B. Why I Love Kenwood; my local hidden gem

Located in Hampstead Heath, Kenwood House is an English stately home built in the 18th century. It is part of the English Heritage of North West London. It is one of my favourite locations for outdoor family photos. I found this amazing location by driving by one day after work. I parked on the main road (which offers free parking!) and was amazed by the location. Only 15 minutes drive away from where I live, this place is just perfect for me to photograph my families. In this blog, I will tell you why this is my favourite location in London.

C. Explanation of why it is the best family photography location in North London: Magnolias, Heather and more

Kenwood House in Hampstead is the perfect place for family photos in the London area. With the abundance of flowers such as the superb magnolias, heather and daffodils, the scenery makes for a breathtaking background, all within short walking distance, so we can focus on the photo part and not hike all around the place.

In the spring, the gardens are in full bloom, creating a magical landscape which is ideal for family portraits. With so many picturesque spots to choose from within a short walking distance, it is no wonder why this is my favourite to capture your special moments. K.H is definitely one of my top places to shoot in London.

II. History and background: it’s English Heritage

K.H is located in the northern part of Hampstead Heath in London, and was built in the early 17th century as a private home for wealthy businessman Edward Seymour. In 1754 it was purchased by William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield, who commissioned architect Robert Adam to redesign the interior. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the House was home to several prominent families and was later purchased by the 1st Earl of Iveagh, Edward Cecil Guinness, who donated it to the nation in 1927. Today it is maintained by English Heritage and is open to the public, showcasing an impressive art collection inside the old orangery. The art gallery feature famous artist like Rembrandt, Gainsborough and Turner.

III. Family-friendly features

A. Accessibility and onsite facilities

Kenwood House, located in Hampstead, London, provides good accessibility for visitors. The venue has public restrooms, including a disabled toilet, situated on the lower ground floor and near the cafeteria. The on-site cafe offers refreshments and light snacks, but if you fancy a more elaborate meal, you can visit the restaurant nearby. Visitors driving to the House can park for free on the road outside at the Hampstead Lane entrance, although availability is limited. The park is pram friendly, but it can get muddy so bare that in mind.

C. Be a tourist and explorer: Activities and events to enhance your experience

If you wish to visit K.H after our session, this location offers a range of activities and events to enhance visitors’ experience. From guided tours to art exhibitions, visitors can learn about the history of the house and its previous owners. There are also musical performances and outdoor theatre productions held in the stunning grounds during the summer months. For children, there are various workshops and creative activities including art and crafts sessions and storytelling sessions to keep them entertained. What an amazing place to visit with family!

D. What to visit after your family photoshoot at Kenwood House

If you still have some energy after our session, there are plenty of things to see and do in the surrounding area. Take a leisurely walk down Hampstead Lane and stop off at a cosy café for a warm drink. Highgate Cemetery is a real gem well worth a detour for those interested in history, literature, or architecture. Alternatively, head to the nearby Hampstead Village to browse the shops and explore the local parkland in Highgate Forest, on the edge of Hampstead Heath. For a unique and picturesque sight, visit the Pergola and Hill Garden, an enchanted and overgrown garden with stunning views of the city, The Pergola is also another of my favourite location that I will explore in another post.

There’s plenty to enjoy and explore around Kenwood House, making it the perfect destination for a full day out with the family.

IV. Top tips for a family photography session at Kenwood House

A. Time of day and weather considerations

When scheduling a family photo shoot at this location, consider the time of day and weather conditions. The best lighting for photos is generally in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low and the light is soft. If it’s a cloudy day, the lighting will be even and flattering. Take advantage of the beautiful backdrops at K.H and dress accordingly for the weather. Bring layers and umbrellas just in case.

B. What to wear to my Family Photos

Choosing what to wear for a family photo shoot can be daunting, but the key is selecting outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose colours that complement each other and avoid busy prints or logos that can be distracting. If you’re still unsure, read my guide on my website for more tips and inspiration on how to dress your family for the perfect photo shoot.

C. What to bring to my Family Shoot

When preparing for a family photo shoot, it’s important to bring some essentials. A picnic blanket can provide a comfortable seating area for sitting poses that gives dimension and variety to your session. If you have a dog, bringing them for some playful shots can add a joyful touch. Don’t forget to pack some snacks and water to keep everyone energized and hydrated and bring some wellies as the grounds can be muddy in the first months of spring. We can change shoes once we are ready to shoot.
