Their Story

Back in February, I photographed and filmed one of my most heartfelt sessions yet — a maternity and family photoshoot at Camber Sands, Kent. It was my first outdoor session of 2025, and honestly, what a wild and beautiful way to start the year.

This family — Laura, her husband, their toddler Arlo, two excitable dogs, and a baby bump — welcomed me into such a personal chapter of their lives. During our consultation, Laura shared their story: eight years of IVF, of hoping and heartbreak, until finally, with the help of an egg donor from Greece, their little girl was on her way.

As she spoke, I could feel the weight of their journey, but also the deep gratitude that filled this new season of their lives.

A Love Letter to Their Children

I suggested we create something lasting for their film: a love letter to their children. Laura and her husband wrote it together, and both of them narrated it. To hear their voices woven into the film was powerful, even for me behind the camera. It was only the second time I’d made a film with audio, and it felt like magic.

A few words stayed with me:

“Arlo, you were nothing short of miraculous… You aren’t just part of our world; you are our entire world.”

“As we await Freya’s arrival, our story is a reminder never to give up on your dreams. Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.”

Can you imagine Arlo and Freya watching this film in twenty years, hearing exactly how much they were wanted? It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. You can watch their full film above.

A Wild Day at the Dunes

Now, let’s be honest — a photoshoot at Camber Sands in February is not for the faint-hearted. The wind was icy, the light moody, and there I was, still in my hybrid era, shooting both film and photos on the same day (I know, I am a little crazy).

Arlo was dashing through the sand dunes with the dogs chasing after him, Dad right behind. It was lively, chaotic, perfectly imperfect family energy.

Finding Stillness

Amongst all the running and laughter, I searched for little pauses. With toddlers, it’s never about stillness for long — it’s about catching the in-between. “Can you sit on mama’s lap?” or “Can you hear her heartbeat?” Those little prompts give me just a few seconds, and that’s all I need.

Between the stormy skies and fleeting calm, we found moments that were tender, moody, and so full of love.

Why It Matters

For Laura and her family, these photographs and their film are more than keepsakes. They are proof of resilience, of hope after struggle, of joy after waiting. They show what it feels like to stand in the middle of your story and say, This is us.
