5 things you should know if you want to hire me as your family photographer

Hello, I’m Alba, a professional Photographer based in North London. If you know my work and what I’m about, that’s amazing! If you’ve just bumped into me, then welcome! Family portrait is my jam and I’m good at it, but every photographer is different. Some shoot in a studio, some outdoors, some like bright and airy editing, some darker and warm, some pose their subjects a lot, some are more documentary style, you get the idea.

I get it, Photography isn’t cheap and it’s an investment that should be taken seriously. I have written this blog post to make sure that we are the right fit! I’ve been focusing a lot lately on being very clear about what I offer so I attract my dream clients who would hire me for what I’m best at.

  1. I shoot mostly outdoors (apart from newborn photography)

As you might have seen in my portfolio, I love shooting outdoors in nature, but also sometimes in the city. Working outdoors always brings out the best of my creativity.

I sometimes shoot indoors, especially for newborn photography (when they are very small and it’s cold outside), but it’s not my favourite type of session as I find it less creative. Newborn if done from 2 months old, can be done outdoors if it’s warm enough and they have enough layers.

If you prefer studio photography, we might not be the best fit, but I will happily recommend you to some studio photographer friends.

  2. I shoot at Golden Hour

How did you think I got this beautiful light? The secret is the golden hour!

Golden hour is the hour after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is soft and warm. It’s the most flattering light and it creates this beautiful glow in the background.

For this precious light, we will need to wake up either very early or eat dinner later. I know it can be difficult with little ones but it’s so worth it!

So if you want to shoot at mid-day, we might not be the best fit (unless it’s indoors obviously).

3. I will help you with the styling

Okay, guys so if we want beautiful photography, we need to coordinate the looks, so it’s all in harmony. Hear me, I said coordinate, not matching!

I will help you with my styling services and lend you a few items if needed.

My main styling tips for your session are:

*Mum outfit first – neutral and warm tones work best with my editing style – no tucked shirts – no blacks or pristine whites – stay away from small square patterns to avoid screen fuzziness.*If you want to know more, I’ve written lots of what-to-wear guides, which you can find on my blog. Here is the Autumn one what to wear for your autumn family session.

4. Child-led Photoshoot: No to grins at the camera, Yes to emotive family portrait

My sessions are relaxed and child-led. I describe my style as raw, candid and connected.

During my sessions, we play games, we run, we jump, we sing. We have fun! We avoid looking and smiling at the camera unless told. This is your time to relax, lean in, hug and kiss your children, not police them.

With this philosophy, your children will show their true personality which is exactly what I want to photograph.

If you are usually feeling awkward in front of the camera, this philosophy is also great for you as you will focus on the children, relax, play with them and naturally feel comfortable. As a Pro, I know what angles and light are the most flattering, so you will always look great. Plus I always deliver around 70-100 images (including some in black and white), so you WILL have photos of yourself that you adore, rest assured! 🙂

5. Prints over digitals: This is where the magic lies

I will always encourage you to get an album with your images. Of course, digitals are also important to share with family and friends, so all my bundles now include digitals + prints and/or albums. So no excuse! Each album design is hand-edited by me and printed in a professional lab, with a quality unmatched anywhere else. You can find my full pricing with photographs of my Signature Albums here.

If you know my work, you will know that I’m a big advocate of printing your images. No digital file will make you feel the same as a printed luxury album. Your kids would love something tangible to treasure forever and that they could pass on to their own children.
