Maternity photoshoot: Best tips and locations in London

I. Introduction: The Importance of Maternity Photos

Hello, I’m Albalone, a passionate family photographer based in London, capturing heartfelt stories that resonate for a lifetime. Today, I’m thrilled to share some invaluable tips for your maternity photoshoot and reveal a few locations in London for your session.

One of the most common sentiments I encounter from mothers is the regret of not investing in professional maternity photos, particularly with their first child. I understand the whirlwind of emotions and responsibilities that come with pregnancy – the endless preparations, and the financial strain. However, I’m here to assure you that this journey doesn’t have to be overwhelming. As your photographer, I’m dedicated to guiding you through every step, ensuring a stress-free experience.

Pregnancy is undeniably a remarkable journey, a true gift filled with wonder and anticipation. It’s crucial to prioritise capturing these precious moments, not only as an act of self-love but also as a priceless gift for your child to cherish in the years to come. Through these images, they’ll witness the joy, love, and excitement radiating from your eyes, forever immortalising this magical chapter for your family.

Selecting the right artist and location may seem daunting, but fear not – I’m here to simplify the process and help you make the perfect choice. Let’s embark on this journey together and create timeless memories that will be treasured for generations.

II. The Benefits of Professional Photography

A. Your partner taking the photos versus a professional

Imagine this: You request your partner to snap a photo of you showcasing your beautiful belly. How many attempts does it take to capture a decent shot? Was it without complaints? Did you feel at ease during the process? If you’re nodding in agreement, you’re likely all too familiar with the frustration that can arise when relying on your partner to take your photos. Trust me, I’ve been there! My partner never seems to grasp why I look terrible in the photos. Or maybe this is how I always look so he can’t see the difference? LOL

That’s precisely why opting for a professional is the ideal solution for a stress-free experience that leaves you feeling cherished, seen, and understood. Moreover, your partner can join in capturing the ideal moment! Professionals possess the expertise to select the perfect location, choose the most flattering attire, and master the art of lighting. With years of experience under our belts, we have the ability to instil confidence and capture genuine connections.

B. Family Photography is an investment worth making so I offer payment flexibility

I understand that investing in a professional can seem expensive, especially during this stage of your life when there are countless expenses to prepare for the baby’s arrival. That’s why I’m pleased to offer you the option to spread the cost of your session and any of my collections over 3 months, providing greater flexibility for your budget. Simply mention this during our video consultation, and I’ll adjust the invoice accordingly.

Additionally, I provide a Maternity and Newborn Package, which includes a 10% discount on the session fee. It’s worth considering this option as it allows you to capture both your maternity journey and the precious moments with your newborn at a more affordable rate. Investing in these memories is truly invaluable, and I’m here to make it more accessible for you.

III. Selecting the Right Photographer for your photoshoot

A. Qualities to look for in a maternity photographer

If you’re on the lookout for a professional to join you on your family’s journey, then choose someone skilled in photographing families as well. Otherwise, if you’re open to changing and sampling different artists, then you can opt for someone who specialises in maternity and newborn photography.

Another factor worth considering is whether they offer a client closet with maternity dresses. These gowns can be quite costly, so it’s fantastic if you can borrow one for your session. I have invested in a client closet, which you can view here.

B. Researching and vetting potential artists for your maternity photoshoot

Researching

There are various methods you can employ to find a maternity photog. Below, I’ve outlined a few strategies I typically use when searching for someone specific:

  1. Google search: The tried-and-tested Google search method is always effective. Try entering terms like “maternity photographer near me” or “pregnancy photos + [your town].” Explore the first 10 pages of results, ensuring you’re drawn to their portfolio and that their pricing aligns with your budget.
  2. Instagram hashtags: This approach is ideal for discovering smaller, more niche artists. Experiment with hashtags such as “maternity photographer + [your city]” or “pregnancy photographer + [your city].” When reaching out to them, review their work on both Instagram and their website to ensure consistency and quality.
  3. Google Maps: Utilising Google Maps is an excellent way to locate local artists. Additionally, you can directly assess their ratings on their profile, providing further insight into their reputation and quality of service.
  4. Pinterest: This platform serves as a valuable search tool, particularly if you’re interested in viewing images specific to a location. For instance, search for “Big Ben maternity photos” to instantly gauge whether their style resonates with you. From there, you can visit the artist’s profile and explore their website for more information. Visit my Pinterest profile here.

Vetting

Ensuring you choose the right professional is paramount. It’s essential to verify their credentials for safety and compatibility with your vision. Here are a few strategies to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Check their reviews: Visit platforms such as Google Business, Yell, or Trustpilot to read reviews from previous clients. These insights can provide valuable perspectives on the artist’s reliability and quality of service. If you want to read my customers’ reviews, click here.
  2. Diversity and inclusivity: Assess their portfolio to gauge whether they embrace diversity and are LGBT-friendly. Look for evidence of their ability to represent all types of families, ensuring they align with your values and preferences.
  3. Personal interaction: Engage in direct communication by scheduling a phone call. Nothing beats a conversation for assessing rapport and compatibility. Consider arranging a complimentary video call, as I do with all my sessions, to facilitate a deeper connection and ensure a mutual understanding of expectations.

C. Choosing the right fit for your maternity photoshoot

Here are a few questions to consider before embarking on your search for the perfect artist:

  1. Aesthetic Preference: What style do you envision for your photos? Are you drawn to bohemian, documentary, traditional, elegant, or raw aesthetics?
  2. Emotional Experience: How do you want to feel during the photo shoot? Do you prefer a relaxed, playful atmosphere, or do you prefer a quick and efficient session?
  3. Preferred Setting: Where would you like the photos to be taken? Are you more comfortable in the familiarity of your home, in a studio setting, or are you adventurous and keen on outdoor locations?
  4. Product Preferences: Are you interested in obtaining prints or albums of your photos? Ensure that the photog offers these services before proceeding.
  5. Compatibility with Home Décor: Would their style complement your home’s aesthetic? Consider whether their colours and aesthetics align with your interior decoration.

By addressing these questions, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision and ensure that you absolutely adore the final results of your photoshoot.

My Top 3 Locations in London for Maternity Photography

1. Big Ben and the Thames Bank

If you’re after an iconic symbol of London for your family portrait; Big Ben is the star of the show. You can also do a little detour to the London Eye which is only 5 minutes away. Maternity Photoshoot in front of Big Ben: Woman smiling and touching her baby bump, her husband is embracing her.

2. St Dustan in the East

If you’re looking for something majestic that doesn’t scream London, these church ruins are the perfect backdrop for you. Located in the heart of London, this location can get busy in summer so I recommend visiting during the week in the early morning in the first opening hour, and you’ll likely have the space just for yourself.

3. The Pergola Hampstead Heath

If you don’t mind travelling up to north London, this is my favourite backdrop for family and maternity photos. The Pergola offers stunning architecture with the right amount of green space. This spot can be popular so it’s best if you get there early as wellFamily of 4 embracing, dad, mum, baby and little girl, kissing and hugging in Hampstead Heath The Pergola during their autumn Family Photoshoot in London.

4. Notting Hill and Portobello Road, West London

After the success of the Notting Hill movie with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, this is a classic London location. With its colourful houses and charming streets and known for its vibrant atmosphere, this spot can get busy so plan some patience and get up super early! Make it a whole day and plan a lovely breakfast along Portobello Road after the session for a fun family day out.

London offers an abundance of captivating backdrops for pregnancy shoots, yet the most enchanting ones often require a bit of open space to work their magic. I’m particularly fond of those quiet fields adorned with tall grass, where the setting feels untouched by the urban hustle—All accessible via public transport. Among these serene landscapes lie some truly hidden gems — peaceful retreats that feel like a world away from the city—and I’ve carefully curated them in my secret location guide. If this sounds like the perfect setting for your shoot, send a booking request my way using this link, and let’s create some unforgettable memories together!

V. Timing and Lighting for a Stunning Photo shoot

Light plays a crucial role in photography, and that’s why all my sessions are scheduled during the golden hour, either at sunrise or sunset. This magical time of day bathes everything in soft, flattering hues, resulting in stunning, vibrant photos. To take advantage of this optimal lighting, you’ll need to either rise early or stay out late. Arriving promptly is essential for a successful, unrushed session, so be sure to plan accordingly.

VI. Styling and Wardrobe Tips for Your Session

Styling is vital to achieving stunning images during your pregnancy session. Here are some tips to ensure you look your best:

  1. Opt for long dresses with flowing fabrics, featuring openings at the leg, cleavage, or arms to add a touch of skin, evoking emotion and steering away from traditional looks.
  2. Embrace uniqueness by selecting items with subtle colours, avoiding neon or overly bright hues like electric blue or vibrant red, which can cast unflattering glows.
  3. If you prefer not to purchase a specific maternity dress, choose a tailored dress that fits snugly around the bust but drapes loosely over the belly. Accentuating the waist with a belt can beautifully enhance the baby bump.
  4. Coordinate outfits with your partner if they will be joining the session, aiming for cohesive and harmonious photos. Coordination doesn’t mean matching outfits; instead, select colours from a complementary palette. Pinterest is a great resource for finding colour palettes suitable for the session’s theme or season. Look up on Pinterest “Colour palette for + theme of the session” or “colour palette + season of the session” and it will give you a few options to help you start your looks.
  5. Consider accessories and props that enhance your pregnancy session. While I prefer simplicity and tend to avoid distracting props, meaningful jewellery or hats can add personality to your session. Additionally, bringing along blankets offers versatility for various sitting poses.

If you’re interested in booking a session with me, rest assured that all my clients receive styling assistance and access to a client wardrobe at no additional cost.

VII. Posing and Instilling a Comfortable Environment

Posing for maternity photos can be tricky as the hand position can get quite repetitive: You don’t want to have your hands on your belly the whole time. I like it when the mother’s partner is there as it helps vary the positions of the hands. See below a few options for hand position ideas from this sweet maternity session I captured last autumn.

My goal is to capture genuine moments that authentically reflect the beauty of motherhood. With a warm demeanour, I create a comfortable atmosphere where you feel at ease. I intuitively know when to uplift and when to give you space.

I like to avoid excessive posing to ensure that your photos truly represent you. Rather than constant smiles, I focus on soft expressions and real connections. Transforming your standard maternity photoshoot into an extraordinary experience, I encourage you to be yourself and connect with your bump and partner. While I may offer minor adjustments for your best look, my priority is capturing your natural interactions in every shot.

During the session, I aim to capture a diverse range of images that authentically tell your story: the tender touch of your hands on the baby bump, the affection and pride shining in your eyes, the beautiful connection shared with your partner, and much more. These images are not just snapshots; they are timeless moments that deserve to be proudly displayed on your walls and preserved in a cherished album. As your baby grows, they will have the joy of exploring these captured memories, each image a precious reminder of the love and anticipation that surrounded their arrival.

VIII. The Importance of an Emotional Connection

My photography philosophy centres around capturing meaningful moments. To achieve this, I like to break the ice and get to know each other before the shoot and initiate a video call with my clients. This conversation allows us to connect on a deeper level, whether it’s with the whole family or individual calls for couples. I’m genuinely interested in learning about their journey, experiences, hobbies, preferred locations, and any significant tattoos or jewellery they want to incorporate. This approach enables me to capture genuine connection and emotional resonance during the session.
